Chapter Twenty-Five

Karina walked into the room and leaned up against the wall, wondering what to do next. She saw Brent sitting on the couch, his feet up on the coffee table with his laptop open, running another diagnostic. “Anything?”

“Nope. Same thing, over and over. I don’t understand it. We can go back to the system logs and see where things happened, but there was no voice command, no panel command, no reason anything should have changed. There is nothing showing us what is causing it.”

“We have to be missing something. I’ve tried to get in and around the system every way I can think of, and even knowing the system as I do, I can’t get around the safeguards.”

“I know,” Brent said. “James and I tried to hack the system, and we could exactly see what was going on and the system itself stopped it before it could happen. We have too many failsafes installed. There are alarms and notices sent out to everyone in our organization if a person makes one small change to the code, and there was nothing. Plus, we have that tracking program installed that I designed to trace back to anyone even trying to get into it. There’s nothing. I even went out and purchased a new computer and logged onto the Internet through a system I’ve never used before, and it could find me.” He shook his head. “We’ve never had a problem like this. I don’t like it.”

“There’s got to be something we’re missing.” Karina ran her hands over her face.

“You’re exhausted. Why don’t you go lay down for a while? James and I will be okay. Once you get up, one of us will sleep for a bit. We’ll take turns.”

Giving him a half smile, she nodded. “You’re right. Maybe things will become clear with some rest.”

“Go get some.”

Slowly, she walked up the stairs and to the room Mya had said she could use to sleep in. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Karina took her shoes off and stared at the carpet. They couldn’t figure out what was messing with the system. If they couldn’t figure it out quickly, whatever was going wrong could infect the rest of their clients. The repercussions were endless.
